View Full Version : p!ng's Dev Diary: Theed
Here's a preview of an upcoming map based on the urban Battle of Theed. I have to give Linds credit for providing information and inspiration for this, as this was originally intended to be an homage to his Theed streets map (for which he gave his blessing and support) but it turned into its own thing instead. The team members (Azu, Frost, Norman, etc.) have been providing excellent feedback so I really think this will turn into a fun and hopefully fresh MB2 experience.
For those interested in higher rez screens, Mace was kind enough to snap some:

A wild dev diary appears!
Gotta love Mace's new monitor. lol
Map looks great, hopefully it greatly overshadows the old Theed. ;D
A new diary pops up....:O besides that looking really nice some fresh air indeed.

Nice, loving the rustic look, Jabba could do with more rustic textures. I don't quite remember it being so clean.

Holy ****, this looks good.
Looks preti gut, but I wonder about the gameplay :P
Nice.
I remember testing this a while ago, but obviously it's grown into something much...much more. Looks great so far.

Those square things on the building there don't look good.. The rest is great.
Good to see that new maps are coming up.
Looks great. Keep up the good work.

Let's hope this kills DOTF spam.
Holy crap that looks almost photorealistic. Awesome work.

Makes me wish I had a better computer to play at Hi-Res.
Thank you, devs. For this glimpse and all the work you put into it.

Damn, great job ping. Can't wait to see it in action!
Hopefully the looks will be as good as the gameplay, unlike HotFO.

Beautiful, P!ng. As long as the gameplay is good, this will be a legendary map. I'm still gonna keep playing the CMP version in addition to this.:D
Let's hope people will actually play another map over dotf.
This map looks hawt. My eyes shattered.

Visually it looks incredible P!ng and at last we'll have a Theed that actually looks like Theed.:)
That being said, only two people here have commented about the importance of good gameplay. The map can look as absolutely brilliant, but if it has poor gameplay (design, objectives, etc), it will be unplayed along with Coruscant Chase and others.
Also can we get assurances from the CMP team that the CMP Theed will remain. The map is very popular in competitive circles and the objectives are the main reason why. I'd be really pissed if Theed was removed like Deathstar was.
^ Exactly. Who cares about visuals, graphics etc. when map is unplayable? We're really need more balanced maps in MB, where people will be able to play this game in competetive way. Making a intelligent and good planned map is harder than implace the effects. Ofcourse I'm not judgeing this map before the premiere - I'm just hope, that gameplay will be as good, as this map look.
Put a rancor in each spawn and all issues regarding balance will be solved.
Looks good.
This is in no way intended to a be a replacement for the existing Theed. Don't worry about that. It'd be a poor substitute for Linds' Theed anyway because for one thing they're nothing alike, heh. Also, unlike my prior maps (HotFO, Mygeeto, etc.) this one was actually designed from the ground up for MB2 and is heavily influenced by team/tester input. I think that will (hopefully) make all of the difference in the world. I guess we'll see.
That's the best looking version of Theed I've ever seen in a game. Can't wait to try it out and see how it plays.

I am sure everyone is concerned about game play but it is something we cannot really comment on until trying it :( - Although at least it looks hot :P
Too many stairs, typical.
Stairs ain't that bad. Theed just has many stairs. I remember Starwars Episode 1 The Phantom Manace which of course had also a lot of stairs.
It also had alot of gungans if I remember it too!

Yeah...was annoying tho! *UPHERE* *UPHERE* everytime if you were heading the wrong way or a bit out of the direction..

Will this map come out with an Official FA? Or is it just gonna have a copy and paste of the old Theed FA? Still can't wait!

Let's put gungan NPCs there then.

Gungan slaughter should be some bonus secondary objective that opens some door for you....

Current theed looks like a lego city compared to this. Amazing job. And hopefully it'll overshadow Dotf along with the old Theed.

Usually if it's made by an MB team mapper it will be an official release.

I like Mygeeto p!ng, don't listen to what the others say! It brings something unique to the game, there is no other map like it.
I like this too though. Looks like it's coming along nicely! Good work!
Glancing over it, it looks pretty sweet. I hope the gameplay is good as well.
Be careful with the stairs though, I'd hate to see them push/pull abused. If there are any I hope you've mapped it so that they're actually ramps =P
Not sure why I didn't see this thread before
That is looking awesome, love what you've done with the textures and building design! What kind of objective are you planning for this version?
Hey Lindsey, thanks for the comments. Thanks to everyone for all of the comments, actually. The objective is sort of in a state of flux, but the version being tested currently involves unlocking the doors to the generator complex.
The map looks so badass and nice. Hope the gameplay will be as good as the visual of the map.
very cool, any plans for a better skybox though?
I would say the skybox is kind of a WIP, yeah. Though I tend to think it looks better in game than in the screenshots.
I dont see what's wrong with it... It's pretty nabooish.

That's the same skybox DOTF uses I believe...
damn, JKA mapping is on a whole another level:eek::surprise::D
really awesome work, thanks for your efforts!

Hum... Think looks great, but liked Lindsey Theed for gameplay, is lot of fun to play map. Does not look like same map. :S
Is this the same one that was just put on JK3fils (http://jediknight3.filefront.com/file/Battle_on_Theed_FFA;110641)? Only played that for a few minutes but wow did I get lost and turned around.

It looks like that is the case.
The FFA and Siege versions are much larger and play completely differently than the MB2 version.

Thats good to know ping :)
Had a chance to run through it tonight, very nice work!
^ If that's so..
Are you going to release it with a new build of MB2?
Or are you going to release only the map alone in the upcoming days, weeks?
Hey, thanks for all of the feedback. And yeah, the intent for the MB2 version is to be included in an upcoming release, not a standalone release.
