View Full Version : Sandbox SAC if don't trust it
Do not trust SAC 'cause of big sneaky drama thing and deathspike person makes hacks. http://www.moviebattles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28612
http://www.mpcforum.com/showthread.php?t=228219
And 'cause SAC show up on virus scanners as trojan and notrust person wants to disable antivirus...

So, am using sandbox program:
http://www.sandboxie.com/
Stops things in sandbox from doing bad things.
Instructions:
Install sandboxie
Open sandbox settings. (http://i36.tinypic.com/2a6qsmb.jpg)
Set sandbox to run for everything in JK3 dir. (http://i33.tinypic.com/2m2f8qx.jpg) (Need registered version of sandboxie for this, can buy or can pirate.)
Set sandbox to let JK3 stuff write files for JK3 stuff. (http://i37.tinypic.com/2n6sq53.jpg) (Is so can save screenshots, demos, or point settings. Need registered sandboxie again too.)
Need to have Sandboxie driver running before starting JK3. Is yellow icon on left: http://i33.tinypic.com/scuu54.jpg
Can play normally now. SAC not able to write to harddrive anywhere but JK3 dir now. Can still read, though... Will want to block everything but JK3 dir from being read if want to protect against snoopy stuff.
Is no FPS drop.
Need to remember never run JK3 again without sandbox 'cause SAC maybe put viruses into jamp.exe and stuff, this won't protect that. Can set Read-Only access to jamp.exe and jasp.exe and all the non-SAC dll files inside JK3 dir though, and base directory and other jk3 mod directory to protect. Is kinda hassle though, 'cause have to select one at a time...
If don't mind using sandbox to play BaseJKA JA+ Clanmod or other JK3 mods, is fine though.

Good find, bad choice of wording.
Lol, here comes the paranoia squad.
Those virus scanner false positives say nothing except that it is packed in a way that they don't know what's in it or what it does, so they'll just flag it as a virus.
In other words, the antiviruses are acting just like you.
Wow, Deathspike must be really happy to see stuff like that after all he did to give us some protection against cheaters. Especially if posts like that look like an Ewok would have written them.
What we have learned from Star Wars movies? Don't give someone too much power. ^^
What have I learned from life?
People don't know jack about computers.
False positives are far from uncommon (even standard video game anti cheats can give them), and this was written by a competent and trusted MB2 dev.

pretty much most people have to disable firewalls for SAC to work or something or other. Since I have a work laptop and a gaming laptop it is of no concern to me what gets read

analysis by virustotal: 20/41 positives.
i deleted it until there are clear results.
u should check ur internet workload while running this prog.

to those who are paranoid and dont want to risk it, then i guess Sandboxie will do the trick until either He shares his code and someone can verify its all legit or its proven otherwise :/

Sandboxie is a fine solution for those with trust issues. If you're like that, I suggest you use it. It is as the poster says, easy and safe to use.

He shouldn't have to share the code, but whatever, it's up to you guys what you want to think. Even if it is a virus, which I know it isn't, all he would be getting from me would be a lot of renders and a lot of porn, the man has impecable taste.

Indeed, if he shares the source code with the mb2 team (the ones with c++ knowledge) like ace and etc. Then we could use it safely because we trust mb2 team and not that deathspike guy.
(And maybe ace can write some bugs for SAC too!)

Yeah, you are really the one who has to speak about trusting people. :)

Oh, what a splendid idea! ...Apart from the fact SAC isn't just C++ and the core routines are in a different language a lot of coders don't know.
As Azuvector (Or was it Ace..) mentioned, Deathspike is a different 'type' of coder, and even if the MB2 team had the source to SAC(*) they wouldn't be able to do much with it.
* Not to mention SAC is entirely seperate from MB2. It's not like I'm asking to see the source (even though my mod will be using it)
Point is..
1. Trust Deathspike / Trust the rest of the community using SAC / Trust people who know about this stuff.
2. Use Sandbox (For those that can't wrap their head around option 1)
3. Play on servers that don't use SAC (I assume the majority of players on these servers have trust issues, don't know much about computers, or are rather happy using their wallhacks)
Hey... look...
some hackers thoughts on SAC :p

This program sounds pretty useful, so this can be used for non jka stuff too right? Like to control where programs are installed and so they dont install stuff outside of them right?
Just askin' personally I trust SAC enough not to use Sandbox, but Sanbox does sound useful for when using new programs and stuff or even for installing stuff in organized ways...(Im a big fan of that)

Yep, Sandboxies is made for any app.
If Deathspike really wanted to put a virus/trojan onto everyone's computer, I'm sure he would have been able to make it undetectable (seeing as he a lot of experience with coding). Getting detected for packing and how it behaves would be an incredibly stupid mistake to make, in my humble opinion.

This is a pretty silly argument.

Wouldn't blame him if he has.

True.. I would understand XD. Though I don't think he has.

I haven't given up or anything. It just seems everything is running smoothly (well everything apart from the whole thing where people don't trust me or are rather fond of their own cheating abilities). No false positives nor any known bypasses at this time.
The updating seems to make people rage, maybe an easier way of implementing that would be good? >.>
Well on client side I have to manually update mine.. o.o
I'm sorry, am I the only one who didn't understand the first post? :s
Hopefully this paranoia will go away soon.

Updating for a few seconds while you play? What's wrong there?
DS, what happens if an update happens while you aren't ingame?
Deathspike
07-11-2009, 15:09
It simply updates. You may get a brief 2 to 5 second FPS spike, but that's it.
Yes, but I mean, might the anticheat kick you before you get a chance to update?

Backdoor.Generic12.LEO
Note emphasized word. AV knows not what it is, so it panics and throws out a general alert.
