View Full Version : The Ping!

Okay, I've got a question. What the hell determines ping in JKA/MB? A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, I used to get consistent pings of like 13 in most of my favorite servers. Like seriously - it was glorious. I live in Dallas, and many of the MB servers are based in Dallas. But, I uninstalled the game for a long period of time and recently installed it - now my ping is like 50-90 steadily on servers, and when more than 10 people connect it goes to 130+

What gives? Do video cards have an effect on this? I used to have a 6600 in the good ole days - I upgraded to a GeForce 8800 and I get the ping issues. If that's not it, it can't be my ISP because I recently upgraded to FIOS and my internet is blazing fast compared to how it used to be.

Why the high ping?! WHY?!

I didn't put this in support because it's not really an 'issue' rather than a nerd discussion.

Most servers are located in either New York or Atlanta now. :( I get a steady 100+ ping wherever I decide to play. D:

It's just distance. When I was playing baseJKA in college, there were a bunch of servers in SF, right across the Bay. I had a hardline running straight into the city from Berkeley, and a constant ping under 10. People used to joke about how I was sitting on the server.

Then I started playing MBII, and there were only European servers. Pings of ~200.

Nowadays I'm getting a ping of around 100. It's a nice compromise, I think.

DSI moved their servers out of Dallas a while back.

Ping in JKA isn't displayed correctly anyway.

I think the ping is displayed correctly - when I get pings of over 100 I can definitely feel delay.

And it cant possibly be that all servers moved out of Dallas? Even in Base JKA I used to get 13 ping on some servers in the list, now my lowest is consistenly 23 and when I connect it's 50-60.

DSi closed their Dallas, Seattle, Chicago and New York offerings, leaving only Atlanta for the US. However they have both London and Amsterdam, which are really close together and redundant IMO. Don't ask me why they did that, I have no clue.

And ping/lag is determined by distance to the server, network congestion, node processing speed etc.

If you don't know, you'll understand now. Servers in the Netherlands have a better ping for the most of the center europe, however london provides the best ping for east europe.

How is that ignorant? Amsterdam is only 220 miles from London. That's basically the equivalent of hosting one location in Dallas and another in San Antonio.

EDIT:

If they host it in London or Amsterdam i'm fine with it :P
