View Full Version : My rant about my name.
RABBLERABBLERABBLERABBLE
I am tired of people forcing me to change my name on their servers, saying that the word 'Honkey' is racist and derogatory. The word 'Honkey' was used by a freaking TV character named 'George Jefferson' in a TV Show titled 'The Jeffersons' from 1975 to 1985.
For instance, in this episode, George Jefferson explores his inner honkey. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5djylp-Kao
Also, notice how the white man takes no offense in the word 'honkey', as it is not an offensive term.
If I can listen to Honkey-Tonk on the radio (white people music), and I can hear songs by Uncle Kracker (a white singer), I should be able to use 'Honkey' as a game-name in JKA. They said it regularly on TV for crying out loud! It's like banning the term 'Meathead' when Archie Bunker would say it every episode.
I don't care what Wikipedia says. Honkey is NOT offensive. Get over it!

It's true. Honkey isn't offensive.
Well, times have changed. All this trying to protect people's feelings and political correctness bullsh!t. Some may find it offensive, but they should get over it. Bunch of whiny b!tches.
Change your name to HonkeyChinkNiggaSpic, you'll offend everyone at once.
PS. I'm not racist, I'm making a sarcastic remark about political correctness don't flame me.

Well white people used to call black people 'niggers' all the time on television in the '50s, that doesn't mean it's OK to use that word nowadays. The meaning has become offensive because it was used as a derogatory term, just as 'honkey' has become offensive because it was used as a derogatory term.
I'm afraid the general consensus is that the word's meaning has become offensive, so if you want to live in the past and keep using it, be prepared to cause some offence. (Why not call black people negroes while you're at it: PEOPLE USED TO SAY IT ALL THE TIME!!!111!!!!1!1 And it really just means black in Spanish"""!!"!""!£!!!!!!!11111212!21! Oh but wait, words' meanings can change and become offensive over time...)

A word is only offensive as you let it be.

Did it occur to you that he could've meant it from the speaker's end of the trade?
Let's try and not get hostile before you know what the other guy really meant...
Yeah, all those porch monkeys are just too lazy to look it up for real.

I do believe, as a whole, black people are more protective of their 'words' than white people are. As we all know, black people call each other niggers all the time but white people can't. White people don't call each other anything that black people can't.
Also, your point is invalid because 'nigger' was a derogatory term thrown around in the slave days. It actually IS offensive because that's a touchy time in history for Black people. If white people had been enslaved for years and had been referred to as Honkeys at that time, it would be highly offensive to call them Honkeys now. But that's not the case. It's like calling a Jewish person 'Ovenfuel' or something.
Once again, I reiterate my point that 'Honkey' is not derogatory or racist. It's simply a label for a white person. Labels are not racist - sorry.
'Ovenfuel'
O lawd
I dunno, I'd get kind of mad if a black person called me a cracker or a honkey, because it's with the same intent as me calling them a nigger; to offend me because of my skin color.

Saying nigger to some black folk doesn't offend them anymore. It's like meh.

Ah, I see how you could've meant something else now. I just assumed since you had been decrying political correctness in your last post... Sorry for any offence caused: I was obviously not being serious with my insults; just trying to demonstrate a point.

What about 'chink' or 'paki' or 'towel head'? Those don't refer to any particular traumatic historic event, but are still considered racist because they are used in a derogatory way towards people based on their skin colour, just as 'honkey' is used in a derogatory way based on your skin colour. Making it racist. As Tenken was getting at, it doesn't really matter about the history of the word, it's how it is used. If it is used by society as a racist epitaph, then it is a racist epitaph no matter how much you don't think it should be.
Just grow up and stop being unnecessarily offensive. You're the type of person who would accidentally call a girl 'big' and when she told you she didn't like you calling her that, you would keep doing it just because she told you not to. You're not a rebel; you're just a stupid 14 year old.
Just grow up and stop being unnecessarily offensive.
I lol'd.
It'd have to be the server admins that need to grow up and stop being unnecessarily offended.
I don't like the name Honkey. It doesn't offend me, I just think it's a lame name choice, but he has every right to use it. Sticks and Stones is a good way to be, flipping out over a name or a term is kind of stupid, really.

I can't swear for the same reason you can't call yourself honkey. Censorship is an inherently arbitrary thing. There's no use arguing with it. It doesn't matter whether you, personally, are offended by the word. Or whether anybody but the admin is.
A word, in and of itself, is not offense or inoffensive. A person is required to be offended (or not) in order for it to gain those qualities.
This whole discussion is semantic.

Never heard of it. Closest I've heard to "Honkey" is "Honkey-Tonk", which is a music style. Oh and the Rolling Stones song "Honkey-Tonk Woman".
Never heard of it being used offensively. Seems to me like half of the people in the world are looking for words to be offended by.

Actually I was getting at a word is only offensive to people if they take it to be offensive. I could go around and start calling Mexicans "Geese," and it might soon become offensive, for no appearant reason other than I'm using it in place of their ethnic heritage.
Most people being called "offensive" words aren't usually offended, in my experiance.. I get a kick out of it when people try to call me something offensive. It's like "oh how cute, look at him try to offend me with an arbitrary word." Usually it's just white people who get offended, probably because white people came up with most racial slurs and now feel bad about it. But we all know, white people are generally just very disingenuous and are trying to save face when they say "I'd never call someone an offensive term!"

Damn, this guy is smart. He's like a freaking mind reader! Give this man an award, please!
Anyhow, now that I have acknowledged the more moronic members of this thread, I can move on.
'Honkey' is not derogatory, it's another word for white person. It's like Gay is another word for Homosexual. I don't see Homosexuals getting offended about being called Gay. If Honkey were offensive, we wouldn't have Country music being referred to by politicans, old ladies and children alike by 'Honkey-tonk'. George Jefferson wouldn't have been famous in the late 70's for calling a white fellow a 'Honkey' regularly - WHEN censorship was at an all-time high and strict!
I mean, that's as simple as it gets. It's really not my problem if people decide to take a word offensive - that's not the point. A noobie 'Padawan' could log on to my server and I could decide out of the blue that word offends me and boot him. Is there anything he could do about it? No. Is it bull**** and deserving of a rant on his part? Yes.
