'Dissatisfied' With Age Of Conan, Funcom Co-Founder Quits

Massively multiplayer online game Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures has a new producer and game director, after previous incumbent Gaute Godager resigned from publisher and developer Funcom.

Godager was one of the original founders of Norwegian company Funcom but has resigned over issues with Age of Conan and is now pursuing new opportunities outside of the games industry. He will be replaced by former Anarchy online producer and game director Craig Morrison.

"I have done my very best making this fabulous game, but I have concluded there are elements which I am dissatisfied with," said Godager. "I have decided to act on this, and as a result I have chosen to leave Funcom. It is time to get new, fresh eyes on Age of Conan, and I wholeheartedly support the appointment of Craig."

Morrison has also previously worked as operations executive at the UK Telegraph media group and as associate editor at IGN’s Vault Network – where he managed dedicated websites for several massively multiplayer online games.

"Taking on the position as producer and game director on Age of Conan is a great challenge but also one I welcome. I have a clear conviction I can lead the further development in a good way, evolving Age of Conan into something even better. My main priority now is therefore to listen to, and act on, player concerns, while ensuring we add additional great content to the game," said Morrison.

"At heart I will always be a gamer, and the coming changes and additions to Conan will always be done with the gamers in mind. Together I am certain we will shape an amazing future for Age of Conan."

Craig Morrison did a good job as AO's community manager... if he runs AoC anything like he did to AO, maybe this'll be a good turn for AoC.

Two ominous signs have come recently for Age of Conan fans; developer Funcom went through a round of layoffs, and they announced plans to merge some of the game's servers in order to maintain a "healthy" population. Despite this, Funcom has maintained that development will continue for both the PC version and the upcoming Xbox 360 version of the game, confident that Age of Conan won't follow Tabula Rasa into oblivion. A writer at Vox ex Machina doesn't share that view, pointing to several of the game's flaws as reasons why it didn't maintain the popularity it enjoyed at launch.

Stock down to $2 from $50 when the game came out.

Yeah the stock nose dive after the hype was worn out looked pretty funny. Hopefully this ****ty company goes under before it releases its next over hyped game.

I approve of this thread. That company deserves to sleep with the fishes for what they did.

Putting 90% of your development + budget into the first 4-5 hours of a game = pure, microsoft-like, evil. They tricked reviewers, they tricked customers and in any other business they would probably be getting raped by trading standards now.

Hmm i love the economic nose-dive, good time to buy stocks, i figure unless the whole country goes under, you can get good stocks cheap, like google and stuff, thats epicly offtopic but whatever.

It's good to see MMOs going under. Why? Because I'm tired of companies thinking POS games should be left barely surviving. Just kill the ****ing game or make it free already. Note to SOE: Make PlanetSide free, it's got a population of under 100 people at peek times!

Also, it shows for a fact that the MMO's style failed.

this game could have perfectly pulled a GW and be good. But they pulled a WoW and failed.
