Made of fail. They only looked at the speeds.
Belgium for example, has decent speed (as shown by their 14th place) but they are among the biggest failes in the world because they still employ low limits on bandwidth (meaning, if you have more than 15GB traffic in a month, you get reduced to smallband).
There are things more important than speed.

Japan also has a faily low download limit from what I've heard
Japan recently made a cap of 950gb on satellite service(the highest satellite cap in the US is like 2gb)... if you consider that low, your crazy. Satellite is usually capped way lower than regular internet service because it's so easily overloaded.
But yea US is fail in speeds.
Lol Czech republic pwns.. D;
02 telefonica ftw, bastards, fkn expensive their internet is.

USA has size limits only if you are on satellite, a small WISP, or Time Warner or Comcast cable.

Oh come on. Don't be mean.
Belgium has 2 providers atm, both of which have a standard limit of about 20 GB, for a price higher than most american or european providers. How many of the USA providers have a limit below 50 GB without also being very cheap?
Many European surveys have pointed out that the Belgian and Croatian providers are among the worst of their limits (and lack of an alternative). I never stated that there are no limits in the USA, but there are possibilities there to get limitless internet, or at least internet with an insanely high limit. Comcast for example has a 250GB limit. that's 12.5 times as much as here in Belgium, so yea, please forgive me for 'dreaming'.
My previous post was valid.

How do you think we in the UK feel? We don't even have today's required speed or whatever that graph means.

I have a 6Mbit connection with fastpath and no traffic caps for 20€/month.
I can't really complain.
Poland fails. 30th place. I pay ~15-20€/month for 1Mbit (upload 256kb ;/) via cable, though there's no any limit.

I have 8Mbit and I about twice as that, but it includes phone and HD/digital cable television
It really rocks when you can download stuff that fast, unfortunately not many places, but it makes gaming fun and low ping!
There are things more important than speed.
That sounds so wrong...
I hate it when people do this. You've got to be pretty pathetic if you try to make yourselves sound better by "WE'RE BETTER THAN AMERICA READ THIS!!"....but for the sake of feeding the troll..
I've lived in both europe and the USA, and europe's internet is slower, fails a LOT, and goes out for hours about every week.
the internet i had in the states was about 1/3 the price i pay for internet here (living in europe currently) and was about twice as fast with no limit.
the euro internet im using now is constantly throwing lag spikes and failing on me i have to have the company come out and fix this stuff on a monthly basis, and it goes out at least once a week for about 3 hours.
so throw whatever numbers or surveys you want, from experience i'd say american internet is far better and far cheaper, and much more reliable.

I beg to differ, bra. That has to be the worst internet service provider if what you say is true. My ISP hardly fails me. I get disconnected from the internet max once per year, and that is due to maintenance. Otherwise its steady and true to the bandwidth I'm paying for.
Can't really say anything about American ISP's.

Of course America is going to be behind in a speed test. Basic geography should tell you that.
The countries that are on top are small, and so it's easy for them to provide internet to the entire country, since there's not that much country to cover. On top of that, America has a giant rural region in the middle where it's hard to get infrastructure to.
So, basically all this study did was rank countries in order from smallest to largest, modified by their ratio of urban to rural areas. It's not about broadband at all...

Nice sample size, you can't draw any proper conclusions from trying 3 different ISPs. And there's no such thing as "Europe's internet", each country is different obviously. This is where averages come in handy, such as the ones presented in the research.

Im not saying All euro internet is horrible, just the one i currently have (in germany atm).
I really hate these threads that are designed to start the europe vs america arguments....we're allies right now, please just act like it (not you, but the people who start these kind of threads).

I think sometimes people forget that the US covers as much land mass as all of Western and Central Europe. Most of the countries on that list don't even compare to the large states. They're downright dinky, in fact. Japan's islands have roughly the land mass of California. It's really easy to get small parcels of land and tiny little populations wired for the future. That the USA and Russia are so high on that list is really rather impressive.
Sorry to interrupt, but this discussion needed a sense of physical proportion.

Ugh my country fails when it comes to broadband speed...

Yeah, but it's Canada. Other countries are known for stuff like having ninjas, starting world wars, and being fat. Canada's just huge and really frickin' cold. ;)

Pretty much what wilde said... and I mean our internet isn't that slow really. 12MB/s internet here... and I download faster than pretty much every single euro in beta :P 3mb/s AVG per file on Filefront. And I can download about 2.5gb in 10-20 mins... pretty good IMO.
Japan especially is going to be REALLY high... they get bored with tech **** over there... I mean come on they made remotes for your freakin toilet that flush, and open/close it... I mean, really? :P

I supposedly have a 6 meg download connection - yet I only see 365 kb/s speeds, I've only seen meg and more when using a heavily seeded torrent.
Korea should be far higher than that, their PC bars get a few gigs worth of speed easily, and it's a buck an hour.

Haha true. But the cold part is fun... I can't stand heat. I actually enjoy fall more than any other season.
My broadband sometimes get crappy in the following situations; storms, strong winds, freezing temperatures in winter, etc... my local net company is the only one available in my town, and most of the time it sucks ass. :(
Well, I rarely have problems with my ISP. And if I do, they're usually fixed promptly. It's 7 mbit (up is 512), I believe it's $35 a month. Only downside is a 50 gb limit. But I've never gone over that in a month even without being careful about downloads, so it's no problem.
