I'm aware that most people don't share my taste in music, but there's always a chance someone can be found to appreciate the esoteric. ;)

Comus. Their first album is the most disturbing, unique prog rock/folk ever. Lyrical themes include murder, **** and execution, all pulled off brilliantly.

And a bunch of great obscure metal bands that I doubt anyone here would care about.

They're way too hardcore for you guys to know about.
While we're all listening to Lil Wayne and Pendulum, Jaap will be over there rocking to Slayer.
One of the few good things to come from the 80s.
I lol'd.
But yeah, the Pixies are good, and "Where is my mind?" kicks a lot of ass; it was in Fight Club too.
EDIT: Wait, you just recently discovered the Pixies?

I always liked them, but never bothered to hear a full CD for some reason. I "acquired" Doolittle recently and have probably listened to it a dozen times.
oh ok. I don't have many full CDs of anyone myself. My interests vary a lot, so I tend to just take the best of everything.

Enjoy ; )
Humor me.
Sure, I already had my laugh.
First there's A Forest of Stars (http://www.myspace.com/aforestofstars). Definetly one of the weirdest bands I know. Start at Part Two if you don't have a long attention span. They're sometimes described as Psychedelic Black Metal, but don't expect raspy vocals or constant blast beats. Instead, you'll get vocal ramblings, violins, flutes and a lot of progression in the songs. Took me a few listens to appreciate.
Revelation (listen to Wither) (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=21507059) is a doom metal band from Maryland that relies on subtle interplay and emotion rather than heaviness or technicality.
@Nader: Edge of Sanity is cool.

A Forest of Stars should just change the ''Black Metal'' to ''Rock'' from their listings. I hear no Metal in there. :| Well constructed songs, yes, but Black Metal ? No. Only very few elements of it. Those are not even black metal vocals, don't even mention that. Actually, the single word Psychedelic fits them good.
On the other hand, Revelation sounded good. Vocals remind me of old 80's rock bands. Not a bad thing though. Atmosphere can be a great thing, if produced correctly, and they managed to it correctly.

Bit early to judge, consider you haven't even heard the entire album? They're pretty much black metal riff-wise, reminiscent of Negura Bunget sometimes. They're too heavy to be called rock. You should also note that I went out of my way to say the vocals weren't black metal style, so I'm not sure what you meant to say with that. :P Anyway, I don't care if the music I listen to should be called metal (a few of my favorite bands are on the line, and regarding them I would have no problem if someone tried to dispute their metalness), but I think you're wrong in this case. If not black metal then at least some other form of metal.
Their riffing is closer to traditionnal Metal than Black. But the thing is that I did hear some rock riffing in there. :p But as I said, the songs are very well constructed.
I can help you out on loads when it comes to Black Metal, as it is my primary style. ;) But keep in mind that it's not always blasting. It does fit perfectly, but there are other beats. I can be slow but has to retain the riffing style.
But the thing is that I did hear some rock riffing in there. :p
And for the vocals, they're normally supposed to give you the chills, or sound completely straight out from the flames of Hell, or sound like the vocalist is being tortured. Also, the raspy sound usually is appreciated. :p
