View Full Version : Faking?

Really cool article about aliasing, it's about QW community, but tbh, we can regard what is written there to any other game, especially to MB ;) -> http://qwdrama.com/2008/02/10/mirror-mirror-on-the-wall-who-is-lamest-of-them-all/

I like fakenicking o.o

As long as it's not stealing someone's nick.

Seems to have nailed most of the phenomenon. With one exception, I've not used a name othern than my own in about... 10? 11 years I think? Once I chose the handle, it was unique enough that I never had to alter it. I've done google searches using my name, and everything I've ever seen come up was me posting somewhere, or a file or map I'd posted or what not.

Oh, the exception? Just to mess with people and be able to use horrible puns (my game skills never alter - I universally am mediocre), I've gone on a few MB2 servers as (FOTA)RedEyedTreeFrog. It's part of an in-joke between me and a friend who plays on occassion (Kessno, for those who know him, is also (FOTA)Bullfrog).

Surprisingly enough, some fairly good reputationed players actually use fakenicks so they can act childishly, drop during games or do other lame activities on the server.
That's the only thing in there that really seemed to describe typical MB2 aliasing, as far as players I'm aware of are concerned, myself included. Aside from that, the article seems to be rather negative towards "fakenicking" in general, which suggests to me that the writer had some sort of bad experience with aliased players. I'd assume that players in other games probably use aliases for more of the reasons described, but most if none of those seem to apply to MB2's community if only because most players around here don't seem to care about skill level.

Shad brings up a good point as well. Most alias users in MB2 just do it for joke-related purposes. That sometimes of goes in hand with acting childishly or doing lame activities, but even in those cases, the aliases are intended to make people laugh. Hell, honestly, I find MB2 to be the funniest game I've ever played, just because people have a tendency to do funny or stupid things, and intentional or not, those funny and stupid things provide a lot of laughs.

One thing that seemed completely unlike the MB2 aliasing craze was the final comment, however.

However, the most funny fact is that some fakenickers don’t actually like other fakenickers.
Not sure what the case is in other games, but in MB2, most people simply don't care if somebody uses an alias. It's pretty much common practice at this point. As I said, MB2's a funny game, and most people seem to be on the same page when it comes to the notion that goofing off is an everyday offense.

I agree with Judson about the whole fakenickers don't like each other bit. Fake nicks are most fun when done in groups.

I was on FA 24/7 once, and Meta was supposedly late for a clan match or something, so everyone changed their nicks to variations of Metaguardian. Hilarity ensued when the real Meta showed up.

Indeed. Or you come across Doll and her following on a server all using four-letter rhyming names in magenta, heh.

Still though, the majority of folks using aliases or obviously fake names in MBII seem to do it simply as an excuse to be asses. (Not that that stops a lot of them from doing it with their real nicks.) And JK3 in general too I suppose: who hasn't ran across an obnoxious 'Padawan' or fifty in their time playing?

I rarely stick with the same name, and it's even rarer to see me actually playing as "**Kazi**" or "Ø.Kazi" or "Kazi", though usually I tell people who I am through my binds...

Or a white name with a ^5 punctuation mark...

But I usually alias because my old names get boring, not for any of the reasons in the article...

what does it matter? Aren't ALL the names we use Aliases, unless we actually use our first and last name?

There's a difference between calling yourself something consistently as with a pseudonym, handle, nickname, or assumed name... Using something other than your legal name tends to be a good idea online in most places, although there's nothing stopping you from using it.
There's a difference from using such a handle as a substitute for one's name, and just changing it incessantly for purposes of being anonymous and unrecognizable.

One is providing a means for others to identify you without providing your real, legal name--so as to separate your legal/real world identify from your online one, while the other is intended purely to obfuscate being able to identify you at all, within the context of the place you're using your aliases in.

One's a means of providing others a way of identifying and knowing you, the other is not.

There's a significant difference between doing that, and swapping names/ips to avoid bans or kicks, being an ass under an alias so you dodge the interpersonal consequences that normally come with such behavior, etc.

It all comes down to intent. Want to be anonymous? Knock yourself out. Want to be an anonymous ass? Go away. :P

I alias all the time. Infact, I rarely ever find myself using my real name in games. It's so much more fun to be a jerk than a nice person. Do I care whether or not you like it? Probably not.

I never keep the same name for more than a few weeks, if I play at all. I haven't had a name people would know me by since 2006 or so.

The biggest thing I have noticed in my time doing so is that the community is filled with douche bags, douche bags who are especially douchey to new players.

And yes, they are "veteran" players who have been playing for years.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of decent people in the community, but there are also a ton of immature douches.

i just use fakenicks when i just want to play relaxed and not talk. Also i used it when i had admin, it was so funny to see people acting like jerks because they though not admin was on (and get inmediatly kick/banned afterwards)

Aliasing is the only way to play.

I mean, sooner or later the name you use is going to build a reputation that you'd rather not deal with in game every time you play.

Why should reputation matter to those of us who aren't morons? Like I said - I've been Shadriss for over 10 years now. I do have something of a reputation (I flatter myself, possibly), but not one that I wouldn't want to deal with. I find it odd to get requests to help map this or that, or requests to help with a mapping problem while in the middle of a firefight, but not so much so that I'd not want to be me.

Even when in the (bad) guise of RedEyeTreeFrog, it's very readilly apparent that I'm Shadriss... I seem to have this way of speaking (typing) that's fairly distinctive.

Usually how people spot me.

Though really, I don't like people knowing who I am. I get bothered then, and I hate typing to people.

I've had my name for three years and I use it for Mb2 and every other game. I rarely ever alias.

Except on April Fools day when you kept aliasing and coming on the server trying to spam about sex, get Supa to ragequit and be a general annoyance while I repeatedly kicked/tempbanned you. Then after Duh banned you you tried to trial me for being a witch.

Anyway, I usually only use aliases when I'm on the FA 24/7 server and trying to hide the fact there's an admin about or when I just want to play anonymously for a bit of peace and quiet. Trouble is, I make the mistake of using the same aliases regularly and people always work out it's me quickly because half my binds stay the same.

Maybe people who are actually new themselves. Anyone who's actually been playing JK3 longer than a day or two realizes anyone with the Padawan name is just someone who doesn't want to use a real name, since it's ridiculously common behavior. :P
