View Full Version : MB2 culture
So I have been playing anonoumosly recently
So far I've been repeatadly tked intentionally, /killed by admin, called a cheater without trying to provoke people and just generally being quiet (I'm not completly innocent, I'd do a few accidental team kills myself)
And many of these was by people I thought wore my friends. Some of them from my own clan even. I'm sure if I told them who I was they'd be like "OMG sorry! That was you?!"
My point is..
Everyone keeps saying it's the newbies making the unfriendly mb2 community. I'm starting to think it's the vets and their lack of respect and manners for anyone they don't know. I don't want to be friends with someone like that.
Come to think of it, the players I liked the most wore in the start when they had not played for long. Players are generally nicer when their new. Then after time I'd like them less because they would get more arrogant.
Anyway, thoughts?

Well, it depends.
I actually fight this effect - I'm mean to everyone equally:p
But yea, that's true I've done same few times and faced similar circumstances...
I dont know.. i dont do that kind of stuff when admin.. but ill try to play anonoumosly to see if thats true..
Sounds kinda sad though..

fixed.
And, Parrish, it all depends on what you consider to be a vet. Few people from B15 and B16 are still here. Most of them have gotten sick of this kind of thing. I play under an alias too, now, just so I don't have to deal with people. I actually find that this stuff happens more when people know who you are. I'm surprised you found it as an anonymous player. What server were you on?
Actually it's harder to start playing mb2 as gunner, than as jedi, leading to even more jedispam.
Newbie gunners often tk (bullets are slow, unlike other fps)and get shouted (ZOMG NOOB LRN2AIM) and sometimes tked by jedis, while its not their fault that jedis strafe as mad.
Newbie jedis hardly have chance to accidently tk someone. They also get far more kills by swingspamming (even if you drain them, who cares? they still jump+swingspam and often kill you if you don't have big skill), than gunners do by spray n' pray.
Getting pwnd by jedi as gunner doesn't make newbs fell that gunners are balanced. Calling them noobs neither helps them to start in mod (why play it, if community hates you from beginning?).

There's more than you would think. We just blend in now since we all suck major arse. (Especially you, Walker)
But yeah I did this once a year or two ago, I was accused of cheating because I came top and nobody knew who I was, I was banned by an admin on a server (don't remember, it was either SW, or a US server) for clipping him as he strafed across me (I killed the dude I was shooting at too might I add). In general, people disgust me which is why I maintain my current name, it gives me less grief.
Bleh.. I got banned once on Chosen because I was "Talking too much which was distracting the admin from playing"
Friendly community for you there. :P

I'm nice to everyone when I'm an anonymous player, using my real name, or admining a server (all happen). When I set precedents as being a nice person, my clanmates and visitors tend to reflect that behaviour, but when this mood is adversed by other people, I'm quick to get rid of them... but when I'm not an admin, I just keep playing. With the nice people. :(

Anyhow, yeah, Parrish has a point, and not a new one at that.
I get all sorts of nonsense thrown my way under my aliases, that I don't when I play under my own name. It tends to be somewhat depressing to get TK'd, revenge TK'd, called a multitude of odd insults, etc.
I'm kind've hoping the new TK system will help cut down on some of that hostility, since people will be able to vent via a game mechanic that'll actually mean something, and hopefully will be less abusive of their fellow community members in chat or revenge TKing and such.
my thought is you need to get out more and have sex

I go on TK sprees and repeatedly swear out anyone that gets in my way. This is the most fulfilling way to play MB2. :p
No but really I would say MB2 has a pretty good community compared to other FPS. You're not going to find an online community where there are no idiots. Go look at CS:S or COD4.
O and Pilo, I don't even see 99.9% of the cool people from b14 and b15 anymore, they all disappeared. Tis' a shame really.
I get TKed more on my real name than I do on aliases.
A lot more.
I've been playing almost exclusively on aliases recently, and a few of them have gained quite a lot of respect... some others have been pissed all over for no real reason. I think it's just the luck of the draw. However, donning that "mysterious stranger" mentality seems to get at least a modicum of respect if you have the skill to back it up :p
Now I just like poking fun at DG and I go around destroying everyone with my god0like ego.
It does seem to be the more you play the meaner you get. I suppose it's because you get less tolerant of S**t being thrown at you.
Right, right, now, if you get chat killed, you promptly switch teams and TK the person who killed you.
Indeed, you don't take **** from anyone.
Anyways, I agree that there are a lot of immature people on MB2. Yet, you really don't see this in some games only because of the limited chat function in other games.
I mean really, when people do converse in most other games, it comes out to the same garbage as MB2.
Alright, im not "Innocent" Of acting like you depicted in your post, ive been known to flame people for **** like that tking and crap, but then again i get tked by uppertards alot (which they think annoys me but its really just funny) And other nonsense. Im Ok with that, i understand people arent equally good on the game and thats fine, attitudes more important 90% of the time. What i cant stand, is when i play alias'd like today, and get accused of Wallhacking and Aimbotting. Idk if any of you know how I play or what classes, my main affinity is sniping and i tend to make some very interesting shots, some that are just 1337 and some that are just blindluck, but whats annoying is people are so bent on the fact that if anyones better than them then the person "hacks" or has "no life" and is "some little white kid with glasses and pimples" Im sorry, i dont apply to any of the above.
I cant recall who said it, but yes most of the hostility in this game stems from Teenagers, im 17 myself so i guess you could say im immature at times in-game, and i can get pissed over stupid **** im not gonna deny that lol. And yes, Vets tend to be more pricklike than newbies, cause newbies dont know any better on mb2. Annnd yeah im done ranting now :P
The problem is that the general demographic of Mb2 is teenagers.:x

In the four years that I've enjoyed this mod, I can honestly say that I've met no more than two decent people in-game who weren't already real-life friends. Sadly, I've fallen out of contact with both (one of 'em fell in with the Windus a while ago).
There are some who have been nice to me, but were dickheads to other people.
I'll start off by saying that I see myself as a "random" MBII player who pretty much has no friends in the community.
I generally play on lower population servers because I find the popular servers to be very stressful and hostile, but I have played with some veterans and pros. MBII's culture is no different from high school culture in my eyes. The popular crowd is the veteran/pro-players crowd. I find they're very close-knit and very cold to new players or people they don't know. They're not necessarily mean, but they won't do anything to make you feel welcome, they won't give new players any advice and you get the impression that you're basically dirt in their eyes. None of this affects me on a personal level, but it doesn't make your play experience any more enjoyable when the other team is full of elite players who aren't saying anything to you. The elite players usually have a flock (or a murder, if you will) of lower-tier players trying to suck up to them, bonus points if you're a female player. Below that, you get the randoms, which can come in any shape, size or colour, usually individual or come in small groups and their skill varies wildly.
I like playing with the randoms the most, not just because they're easy to kill, but also because I don't feel like I'm an outsider when I get into the game. Random players don't form cliques the way the well-known players do. Everyone talks to each other, whether or not they have something good or bad to say. You never feel like you're excluded, and to be honest, a lot of what happens on the random servers is way more fun than what happens on the prime-time servers. It feels more like a seedy bar and less like a celebrity night-club.
That being said, I'd agree that MBII as a whole is very unwelcoming to new players, whether said newbie is playing with vets or randoms. The new player's questions will either be ignored or the response to it will be misleading. It's not exactly fun trying to explain Moviebattles II to a new player, I know what that's like as I've introduced around 20 or so of my real life friends to the mod and gone through the process of answering their every question about every control/ability/weapon/what have you. But when someone asks you how to access the point config. screen, it's not too much to ask that you reply without advice like "type /qui gon in the console". I've seen that kind of behaviour from reputed players as well as unknown players, so I don't think it's fair to point the finger at the veterans specifically.
At the end of the day, nothing really separates most veterans from random players other than the date they downloaded the mod. The vast majority of them all behave the same, the difference is that loudest ones managed to gather a following, the rest did not.
Hahhahah yes! under the age of 17! IM NOT INCLUDED!!!! lmao.

I generally don't seem to get that bad a deal when playing. I only rarely encounter those who are there just to spoil others games with TKs etc., though I feel that a fair few players should be more forgiving of those who accidentaly hit them, rather than turning round and slashing or rocketing them. I don't understand why some people seem to attack Dekas on sight, their team or not but I can live with it. The only thing I personally feel is widespread and annoying is the constant calling of 'noob' when someone kills you, especially with SBDs or Dekas. The calling of noob in general isn't helpful to anyone, even if the said player is rubbish.
Most "vets" are *******s.
There's a great difference between a self-claimed b19 "vet" (I suppose such exists now), and those who were counted as vets in b17.

For as long as I can remember you've been tking people / provoking others to attack you. You did that to me once when I played under an alias. :p
I must say I tend to be a tad blunt to people I don't know or have never heard of but I also always try to answer the simple questions about game mechanics etc that the new players aren't familiar with. I don't really have interest in trying to make new 'friends' in the internets and I always decline the Xfire invitations of random people. o.o

And of course there are the TKers, who are either people who kill everyone they see until they die, or people who get raged at losing and tk everyone and leave.

I believe you have quite a few valid points in this statement.
Well the MB community isn't going to change anytime soon tbh... People just don't like being in a team with people who are new (leading to the problem of stacked teams which I find on most servers), I find it quite funny though watching them playing, although I joked around with someone one time and they got quite p**sed off at me, I was only having a joke lol.
On tking, not a big problem for me. I don't uses aliases and I don't think too many people hate my guts, and I don't really revenge tk or s**t... you have to remember it's a game really, annoying as it might be sometimes. The only problems is the lack of admins when there is group tking going on, then it just gets annoying... notably the MB Universe Public server, but I guess I should play on DG more. If you get bored and are forced into mass tking, I'd suggest playing MB in more regulated stages or doing something else for a while, that way the MB gameplay becomes much more interesting.
I believe the community has slowly got worse. Maybe its just me, but When i started playing (start of b17), I was helped a lot through my noob stages. Now, whenever someone on a server asks "how do u thro ur saber liek dat????"
They usually get about 2 mins of silence, then a single "GTFO noob".
prilladog
24-03-2008, 23:15
Alas I am probably the one saying it to the noob.
Oh how MB2 corrupts us all...
Moviebattle players works with a simple logic. We've got Ego+ and ego- which only rarely ever happens. Seeing as alot of new players are usually friendly is because their ego+ count hasn't risen to that of a vet player who killed many, and was top dawg once. The more Ego++, the more likely it is that they will flame. You get Ego- if you play for fun and try to stop disputes etc.
Vet = Ego++ hunter.
There are exceptions to these rules, as a matter of fact i used to flame and spam servers in b17, now i have grown up more, and with that comes a realization or two (eh !). rare exceptions tbh.
Oh and not all germans are annoying. (thought AiX have left their mark on the general populace's belief of germans. lulz!)
prilladog
25-03-2008, 04:21
Vet = Ego++ hunter.
Yes that is very very true, the problem is when your a VET and you have loads of ego all stored up, as soon as you stop playing for abit and then come back your all nubby again, but because you still have all your ego and yet no skill, all you can do is mouth off.
Well that's what i'm doing atm lol...

I dunno if the kind of stuff that Parrish describes in the first post only happens on servers I don't visit or what, but for some reason, whenever I go anon, I never experience those sorts of problems. Whatever the case, any given player's personal experience in MB2 is never indicative of MB2's "culture" as a whole.

I've played this mod for all of 3 days. I haven't been tk'd intentionally or been in a fight with anyone seriously. As a matter of fact, the only negative thing I've seen is towards certain clans. Maybe it's just my standard? Almost everyone here makes it seem like most MBII players are jerks. I've accidently tk'd people a few times, but half of the people have blamed themselves. Is it just that when you guys play for longer, you meet a few people that are mean and 'out to get you', and you get a lasting impression that the community is bad? Or is it really as bad as you make it seem, and the majority of the community consists of 'ego wh0res'?

See that's fine, your new everyone will be like that's ok, it's fine.
Give it a week and you'll have people joining servers just to tk you.
I've gotten used to it.
If I don't know you, your expendable =D
Vet = Ego++ hunter.
Am I the only one bugged when people bash vets and say that it's all their fault?
there are jerks, specially when you put some clan members together, anyway i agree that most of the people arent 'jerks', maybe they arent too funny but hey, its ok

Don't get the wrong idea; don't think for a second that everyone in the community is like this, no there are a load of great people that play MB. It's just a few that make me absolutely laugh sometimes... You see ego battles all the time its stupid, it becomes a contest to see who rage quits first, best thing you can do is not take sides and let it play out. And it starts because someone got accidentally tked, why can't people just move on and accept it was an accident lol. Or on the other hand, someone has to prove they're the better man (on a game) by intentionally tking someone so they can spam 'P\/\/NED' and so on, ah it makes me laugh as I said.
Strange as it may seem, this has never been a problem with me. From the time I started playing in b17 and finished playing in b19, I have not really felt unwelcome from either the "Vets" or the "randoms." In general, I found the vets to be helpful in teaching me how to play the game (when I started).
However, both groups are pretty good at strategizing although vets tend to ignore you if they do not atleast respect you. But, these are only the way that things happened with me, and may not always be true.

Who cares, they're probably the same scrubs that shoot randomly down halls into the back of their jedi/sith, or snipe into duels and constantly TK.

I think people in general were just a lot more enthusiastic in b17 than they are now, that's why people who started then find that they had a lot of help from veteran players of the mod. It was a great, new build and there were tons of new players. The community hadn't had a chance to stagnate yet.
People just grew very cynical of the mod/team as the wait for b18 went on. I think that has a lot to do with why things are the way they are today.
Of course, I started in b17 myself, so I don't know what it was like before then, but I've often heard it said that it was the flood of b17-nubs that essentially ruined the game for most of the older players. Could be another reason why most vets are very cold to newer players.
The funny thing is that I think MBII has more players that are above the age of 16 than it does below, so you'd think that treating each other like adults wouldn't be a huge problem. Apparently not.

I don't discriminate, I hate everyone.
lol wow...
Anyways here's a tip that works with me. Respect everyone and they will respect you. Treat others like they treat you... And try not to lower to their level if they are low. If someone bothers you, ignore them and soon they will go away, this will be faster than fighting back and getting in an hour long teamkill war where you both might end up banned...probably what happened to parrish.
That's my bit me old muckers...

Thats a nice fantasy of a view, but MB2 community is terrible and usually people go some great lengths to exploit the anti TK system just to harass a person. Not much you can do about it really, the abuse, harassment, flaming will go on until the Communities inevitable death when the amount of players joining the mod dies down from word of mouth of how bad it can be sometimes. If you say thats not true well I recall plenty more player filled servers then they are now in the past and seems to slowly decrease as each month passes. Now not saying I've flamed the occasional nublet for tking on accident repeatedly for shear stupidity but when they ask a question try to spare a second to explain things more.

QFT. The B17 community was childish(which one wasn't though) but at least people helped each other to learn how to play... Not that some people don't try and teach others.
And now, randomly: People seemed to have a lot more respect(not really respect, but I can't think of a different word) for getting kills with a clone rifle 3 in earlier builds (especially b17 for me) but now, it's like, if I get some kills with it, people say some stupid **** like, OMG USE A GUN THAT TAKES SKILL TO USE LAWLAWL. But then again, I haven't played in a long time because of a total computer reboot and I lost my 2nd JKA disc.
