View Full Version : My foot, your face: Cid's Dev Diary
Don't wanna talk to much, so I'll just show some random stuff I've worked on that may or may not make it in a build at some point in time.
Here are the first couple of things. Both poor quality gif images of early drafts of anims, but you get the idea.
Niiiiiiiccceeeeee...I just wish you could work on the kick animations and the Kata animations..JEDI FORCEOWNAGE ANYONE?
It could be a kata animation for jedi only..but it would be awesome if you could grab someone...punch them rapidly in the gut then Use the force to push them across the room..like getting hit with a cannon ball....
Would be awesome but..Something tells me it's not gonna happen

Who said it was for the jedi? Cid may only be using that model as its the least technical.
But it does look like some sort of combo or special move. Keep it up Cid, although they look simple, try to make them look less sluggish and add more character into it.
Watch a lot of boxing lessons to get nice looking punches, because the first animation looks like a half-hearted, sideways hammer fist. Good work anyway. :p
Hotshot: The first animation kinda is. It's just an opener - not any particular real move.
Alpha: Yeah, I find it the best model for animating, so I use it for everything.
Nice stuff! I'm glad your doing realistic type animations and less of that matrix wirefi stuff :)

Great, I'd love to have some new melee attacks in the mod.

Oh God yes please looks nice I want how soon?
Sweetness Cid, sweetness.
The torso anims for one of the parts are mostly done. It's getting the legs animated in a believable way that is the trick.

That's the biggest beef I've always had with the melee punches (and, really, the saber system as well). Never had any believable leg/footwork animations, so things always looked a little goofy. I want my punches to have some weight put into 'em.

What do you think of the moves in The Matrix - Path of Neo? I thought some were decent looking.
The problem is, the footwork taught novice martial artists is not necessarily meant to be used in combat - like many other aspects of teaching martial arts, it has other purposes beyond teaching footwork (or teaching that specific piece of footwork). Making it difficult to pin down exactly the right way to move the lower body during melee animations.
Or maybe just throw the whole thing out the window and implement old-school aikido, complete with philosophy and lack of striking. (Jk :P)
when I have money again, I'm buying the Matrix Path of Neo, even if it's just to play the Lobby Scene (could have been done better tbh, but still awesome) and the subway fight scene over and over for the rest of my life.
"MY NAME... IS NEO!"
animations look... good for JA, slightly above average in general.
Does this mean we're getting that melee system revamp that I've been waiting for since Keshire was toying with the idea of such a thing back in B17 or 18? I HATE melee in MB2 currently, but if it was done right, melee could pwninate.

Keshire has been teasing the ideas of melee since at least b15 :P
As for what these anims will end up being in as, I can't really answer. I can say that I've re-done these animations over and over and over again, and only now am I happy enough to show you guys these.
The main problem with JA animating is that, since many of the base anims tend to be over-exaggerated, you need to do some ridiculous moves to get em to look right in game.
Matrix Path of Neo is not yet compatible with XBox 360:mad:
I rented Mass Effect and bought Matrix Path of Neo ($7) at Blockbuster; I guess I'll just play Mass Effect until I'm motivated enough to plug in my XBox.
Anyway, I know what you mean with the JA animations; that's why I made two distinctions between the quality of animation. As they are right now, they could go in the game and they'd be fine, though it sounds like you're still planning on refining them, which is cool too. I just want improved melee.
Magic.
Anyway, yeah, get us a good street-fighting system (not street fighter system, mind you :p) or some stuff like that (nothing too martial-artsy, just whatever works and looks good... although that does generally tend to be martial-artsy :x)
I demand a block button. GIVE MELEE PEOPLE A BLOCK BUTTON!

The general idea with these anims is to be martial artsy. At least the ones I'm handling.

That position is really off balance. Its an interesting stance you just wouldn't use it as if anything hit you you'd be likely to fall over if you could stand in that stance in the first place. Also why have you bent the hips so far backwards? You should try to maintain smooth curves to keep the animation looking like someone could do it.
Meh, as long as it looks like it would do some damage if used in meatworld out here I'm fine with it, martial artsy or not. Just I'd much prefer to see the less... useful... aspects of martial arts trimmed off.

The animations are part of a new melee system(in addition to the current one) in the works(Barely started, but started nonetheless.), for the Spy class, and other uses. (Like saberless Jedi/Sith.)
I'm a big fan of Oni (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oni_%28video_game%29), and Cid's a fan of Path of Neo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Matrix:_Path_of_Neo) so if you're familiar with how the melee systems of both of those work, you've probably got a good idea of what's being aimed at.

I'm still waiting for the melee-only /kill animation where you snap your own neck, though.
Update of my very beta implementation:
The system has been altered a decent amount. Here's what is currently in:
-Melee Blocking. By holding down both mouse buttons, you can block around 4-5 melee punches (and soon kicks). A well timed block will result in an insta-throw. You can move left, right, and back while blocking, but your speed is greatly reduced (and the drain while moving is increased). Block points are currently hidden from the user, so you need to develop a sense of it. Finally, blocking is separated into hi/lo. Attacks from a standing opponent require you stand to block them. Attacks from a crouching opponent require you to crouch to block them.
-Leg Sweep: A new kick, the leg sweep lets you drop down under enemy attacks and try to knock them down. It does very little damage, but is an effective tool when you can't block much more.
-If you want to do a throw, you need to hold the two mouse buttons and move forward to grab. This mostly limits throws to one move, but other throws (that do a tad bit more damage) are achieved other ways, such as a well timed block.
In progress:
-Disarm: A good enough melee level will allow somebody to disarm weapons with well timed blocks (Obviously intended for saber based work)
-Attack chains: Chain up attacks with a hit stun
-New animations for everything
This is really nice Cid. ;)

Cid, keep up the great work. This will make us melee pros very happy.:)
Quick question: is there gonna be a point where we might be able to block a saber swing with our hands, as in grab the handle or something before the blade hits us?

That's the eventual idea of disarming. Gonna be tricky and not available to all who get the new melee, though.

double negative!
Wow, Cid! That sounds awesome.
I know this is a bit off-topic, but what about allowing a user to roll (like an ARC can) if he's pushed/pulled? :D Simple request, but it makes melee vs saber a bit more feasable.

In this new melee system will reversals be in?
For example:
player a
player b
1
player a preforms front round house, player b presses grab/block just before kick connects, player b swings player a by the foot throwing them to the floor.
2
player a sneaks up behind player b and kata/grabs them, while being swung around under a certain timed event (just before the lift and punch combo) player b presses grab/block flicking player a over their shoulder.
I think things like this would make the melee system interesting.
What I think it more interesting than this new melee system. Is how it will be adjusted for Wookiees. Now that is going to be cool.
Great system Cid, hope it'll turn out to be fruitful :)

Not the full thing, but it's possible they might get some pieces.
Not really my call, though.

Yeah, let's make a SWEET new melee system to replace the old, ****ty one that we still have left over from base, but THEN, instead of making this somewhat universal (with different levels of mastery depending on the class), let's limit it to one class and leave the others with the ****ty melee.
I hope the melee improvements don't stop here. I mean, these improvements are awesome as ****, but I'm sure you could think of some devilishly clever ways to make it more awesome.
Foot in the rectum awesome? Imagine a melee system where you can kick them so hard your foot actually gets stuck with how far you've shoved it. Kicking ass was never so dirty now that cids on the job!
Wait, so all classes get this? o_O
what, SBD?
anyway, great job Cid.
The way I see it, classes like SBD and Wook really won't get any (but they don't need it).
Other classes may be able to get some aspect of it, either through buying the skill or just by default.
Only one or two classes will get the whole thing.

Probably the lightstick users will get the full package more than likely.
I would probably say BHs too, and ARCs would know all this kung-fu stuff also so......
Hopefully SBD's will gain more 'mobility' in the future seeing as its been cut to pieces by RC3.
This melee system does sound great, I'll love to see it in action... Soon, I hope.

LOL :p I made a neck breaking animation and replaced one of the melee specials with that move for some video makers. i still have the files for it too. I even replaced meditate with a Rainbow 6 style take cover animation to hide behind objects for them too. I wonder what happened to their Video?

As a proud Force Sith, Melee has been great for me. Reading this thread has made me more excited, and has brought more questions from me:
1. Are these applying for all classes? All these new melee moves and what not.
2. Where are the screenshots? If any, I see none. Possibly because I'm on a Mac? :/
3. Is this coming out in the next build? (As I would assume RC4)
4. Aren't force sith/jedi awesome? :D
If anyone could repost the screenshots so I could see them would be great.. it's killing me that I can't see them :(..

1. He has already stated that only one or two classes are getting the whole thing. Other classes may get part of it.
2. I can't see them either.
3. It sounds like this new melee system is intended for the Spy class. Since the devs said not to expect any new classes until after V1, the answer is probably no. Hopefully we'll see parts of it in RC4.
4. Yes, yes they are.

Thanks for the respond SWG.
I don't have the images anymore (they WERE on isarapix), but they're seriously out of date anyways.
I'm not certain when this will be in, but it won't be next build.

1. Only 1 class will be getting the full set if I understood properly.
2. Some shots are on the first post.
3. It won't be coming for the next release by the current look of things, currently we're hoping for this to be coming on the one after that, but as in all modding, things can change and it might not make it for the one after the next either. We'll see when we see ;)
4. No, they aren't :p
We are currently working on a transitional system between the current simple one and the final one. I'd say that almost all current classes will get the transitional system and then the new class(es) get the full new kungfuyoass system.
