Hello everyone,

I don't have much to say other than here is what I have been working on since I joined the Movie Battles II team a bit ago. And some stuff that won't be in the next update but is in the works for the future :P

First off, I am going to do some stuff that you guys have seen before, starting with Revans Flagship Duel. (AKA Leviathan Bridge duel for the BaseJKA version)

It is a 3v3 duel map, Bastila and 2 jedi accomplices, vs Revan and 2 Dark Jedi

For those who are wondering: Yes, on the pipe and on the outside of the ship there IS fake bumpmapping... its not perfect because well.. its JKA :P Some parts of the map are also destructable (Not as much as a map I am going to show later on)

There is also a little surprise near round end, but I will leave that for you guys to figure it out. It is not huge, but I can be life threatening :P.

The second map I implemented into Movie Battles II was Ravager Duel.

3rd map I added into Movie Battles II is RC Bridge duel (RC referring to my Republic Cruiser map - Not Republic Commando)

Since the map is very similar to the Republic Commando RAS counterpart, we decided to do a FA based on that section from Republic Commando (See wiki) Although the map is not exactly the same.

The first assault map is Jedi Enclave on Dantooine. We had gotten permission from SMoKE to convert his map to Movie Battles II. I am not the only one that worked on it (although I did most of it) Plasma started off by adding a few simple things to the map and doing the Full Authentic... I did just about everything else after he put in the spawns/objectives/new things in the Courtyard. (And the FA mind you) Thanks again Plasma for those :P

The next thing is.. uh... Duel of the Fates... BEFORE you go like OMG WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY DOTF OMGZ :P, I didn't do anything to the layout... just visuals, with the help of Frost who did the textures :P (look much better imo)

On my machine I also increased the FPS by somewhere between 15 and 25 FPS by adding Hint portals and fixing some VIS work and Areaportals that were missing in spots. Lighting is also smoother in the main hanger (Added Phong shaders to the ceiling, and changed the barrel things in the middle of the hanger to patches) Along with new glow shaders throughout the map.

Sadly, for you glitchers, you have lost some of your advantage points also, such as getting inside the map by the forcefield things in the gen room from patches... and standing on top of the glass in the generator room also :P. Your fault, not mine, don't whine :P.

Hey, if you are gonna glitch, and you get caught... its gonna most likely get fixed :P

Thanks again to Frost for the textures, which are both more realistic and look pretty good (especially the hanger floor)

These updates DO also include Duel DOTF.

Some of you also know about the Christmas DOTF which was a combination of work from Plasma and myself. Plasma did the textures and I did the actual map work... see the thread (incase you haven't seen it) for more info.

That map should be compatible with the next release, since its has its own BSP and does not have the textures with the map. (uses released DOTF textures)

I am on to my WORK IN PROGRESS section

First one, a lot of you know... Republic Cruiser, which will be converted to a Movie Battles II playable format, as long as a few other mods (Different layouts for each though)

Now, this map probably has the most interactivity that I have done thus far... although it is giving me a lot of issues too :P

This is basically, where you shoot the pipes on the wall (wherever you hit it) steam will come out based on that. It works in-game :P

Corners in the map are FULLY destructible, so watch out... some go away in chucks... others just go straight away, depends on how much damage they take.

I will be working a lot more later to get collapsing pipes and that kind of thing, but there is something thats kinda neat with the ceiling lights... you shoot them, they go out :P so be careful with that :P

Ok, so how you get into that maintenance area is kinda neat... there will be a special section on the floor where ... if it takes enough dmg from heavy stuff (such as TD and rockets) the floor will collapse into that maintenance area... with fuel surrounding you :P some of that fuel will spill on to the floor via efx file.. and the collapsing of the floor will be completely scripted in.

Then, for round end (if the rebels board the Ebon Hawk) I will make a small cut scene type thing or a delay for the objective, and have the door to the Ebon Hawk close... and the ship take off and start to leave the hanger... when it leaves the hanger the round will end :P neat feature imo :P

Not to be a bother, but your second-to-last screenie for the Ravager duel has a small z-fighting error I believe. I saved a picture of it and edited the picture to show where it is. It's very small and hardly noticable, but if you wish, you should fix it. If it's not z-fighting and just my eyes failing me, let me know.

Sigs are shown once per page. It's part of the way to make image sigs less annoying.

Actually, I started doing a script for those where they fly out of the hanger in the beginning of the movie... I don't have time to finish it for the next update though... need to work on other stuff... (will probably be in in the future)

I cannot add them in stationary though (the ones that remain in the hanger) because they cause too much FPS drop.

Yeah we can do what u did to cloud city. Just take away the ''mapping rights'' lol that'd be hillarious.

And Riles that 98 percent of the community includes uppercuts, AND AOD members, AND NS members AND chosen members. It's definately worth it.

I am happy to announce, that Republic Assault Cruiser is done. There are a few things such as bug fixes, and finalizing the FA and such but other than that it is finally done.

Now that you've seen some of the good moments of one of the test sessions we had on RC, I am going to explain and show you some of the map events, as well as the new Random Events introduced into RC.

Random events are actually fairly complex in how they work, but simple at the same time. The map consists of a set number of events it can choose from. At the beginning of each round, it chooses 3 as possibilities to be done at the round. After that, it goes to a yes/no possibility. Some events do not have that, to make them occur more often, but others do. After that, it goes to more randomizing, which then randomize which time period within the round it will happen. Meaning, it gets to be pretty hard to predict when these will go off on you. :)

However, quite a lot of them have audio and visual keys. Some, only have audio keys, so if you have turned your sound off, your loss. :P

There are also another kind of 'Random Event' that happens every round, but what is random about it is the intensity, sound effect, and timing. The ship is being massively bombarded by numerous ships. With this effect, you have a slight screen shake (you will notice it, but for me at least, it doesn't affect gameplay at all - it barely moves at all tbh) as well as a sound effect that plays with it.

Now, I will show you some of the random events that happen within this map. Starting with:


Turbolaser Blast

This random event has both visual (message) and sound cues. It is placed directly in main, meaning you need to pay a large amount of attention or else you will die by explosion or the vacuum of space. If you hear/see it is going to go off, you have 10 seconds to get to either side of the room behind the containment doors. From there, you have access to the lower maintenance area to pass.


Reactor Core Damaged

The Reactor Core Damaged event is pretty simple, it changes the overall lighting of the map as well as some of the textures to go with the loss of power and the conversion over to the backup generators. In addition to that, there is a slight gravity change, adding a small variation to gameplay. The gravity changes from default 600 to 800 which can make you throw grenades off, and jump wrong... so be careful :P


Droid Starfighter Crash

This event is pretty special. It lands itself on the secondary route to the bridge, which can give either team a slight advantage if there is access. This one has no real cue at all, meaning you have to be extra careful. The purpose of this event is to block the extra path, making you take somewhat of a risk to go this way. If it lands on you, you could quite possibly die pretty quickly. However, if you are on one side, you have the option to remove the debris with a quick bomb placement. Remember to get away after placing, else the explosion will kill you. After that, fire still remains in the way... but you can go through with a tiny bit of damage, just don't forget to stop drop and roll!

Now, there aren't just random events, there are also some some-what player controlled events. Here is the first one.

Plain and simple, hack the consoles, airlock opens then closes again. However since players are not in protective gear, they are sucked out and killed.


Shuttle Landing and Takeoff

This next one is again, simple. It, however, is not player controlled and happens every round.

Now, lets take a look at what happens if you win or lose a round, or overall when the fraglimit/roundlimits are hit.


CIS Objective Win - Self Destruction

The Objective for CIS/Imperials in this map is to cause the ship to self destruct. If that happens, Republic/Rebels have to attempt to escape in the escape pods. (CIS/Imps can do this too if they want) Be careful where you step though, these self destruction explosions can be lethal! Overall, I just think this is pure awesomeness and the perfect way to end a round through one team completing the objective. And thanks to some of Ace-Venturas code, if the CIS complete the objective, but the entire team dies the ship still self destructs and the CIS still win by completing the objective. Even with the delay before end round.

This one, is fairly unique and special I believe as well. This happens only when the map itself ends on the fraglimit, roundlimit, or timelimit. The Republic get reinforcements, and the CIS see the total destruction of the ship. This wont happen every round, so I hope this is used well with those rotation servers. If there is a draw however, nothing happens.

Now that I have told you of some of the multitude of events that happen in RC, I would also like to still tell you that there are more, however quite a few are simple. Another one is called Full Security where more of the turrets placed across the map are activated. They, however, can also be deactivated by another hack by the Secondary Objective.

The last thing, is that this map has many visual keys towards what doorways are what. Those doors, are operable via Secondary Objective.

I hope you enjoy all of this, and hope the wait for the release of RC is worth it for everyone, I enjoy this map beyond belief. I know its my own map, but it is probably my favorite now.

Congratulations Mace. When I first heard from you about the various features of this map project I thought it was a visionary project, but now the interactivity, aesthetics, gameplay, and all those elements have come together and I reckon this will set a new standard for Mb2 mapping. Quite possibly this might inspire a 24/7 Republic Cruiser server for a while upon release.

Idd, its pretty much visuals and cover. Its main purpose is to show how some of the troops land in the hangar.

I'm sure you have no reason to worry, Mace always takes that kind of things into account and I can't remember any reports of bad FPS in the testing so far. :)

It was stable enough on my old PC. At worst it would be 30 but I used to get 30 in places like DOTF main corridor and the hangar.

Mace is almost sickeningly obsessed with VIS in his maps, so you should safely expect the best possible FPS for the amount of awesome the map delivers. ;)

There are a few features with this map itself as well, sure not as interactive and awesome as Republic Assault Cruiser but it holds its own. The first one is the death of the Emperor when he falls down the pit. The second, is the catwalk collapse. Small update to emperors lair.

HIGH RESOLUTION LIGHTMAPS.

For those wondering what that means let me explain. JKA has a forced maximum lightmap resolution of 128x128. No matter how low you set the _lightmapscale in a map a entire surface must still fit in a single lightmap. There is a way which some Q3 games support for higher resolution lightmaps which is a forced compile line from the q3map2 compiler.

However, I have been able to overcome that with a small little trick. In doing so, I also limit the high resolution lightmaps to certain surfaces of my choosing, doing that allows for higher performance because the entire map doesn't have it.

So, enough of that. Lets have a look at the Before and After.

The Emperor's throne rooms were the private command centers of Emperor Palpatine. They were located in the Imperial Palace on Imperial Center, onboard the Death Stars, Naboo, Byss, Wayland, and all other locations that he might be expected to visit. Its the same importance as the old carbon chamber... but overall I would say this is a bit less jedi friendly because some of the surrounding areas that were in the old version are now closed off halls.

Right now, it is still escort but there is a possible change to that but it is not final nor even implemented yet.

Cloudcity escort objective isn't bad as the escorts in some other maps as the the player doing the objective can take a part in the battle pretty fully as Han can't get killed by rebs and he can be moved around in combat zones.

With the announcement of V0.0.2 server side patch release I am pleased to announce the Tatooine Revamp project I have been working on on top of everything else. Some of you may have noticed it appear in my signature as well.

This would have been released with this patch had we made it have a client portion as well. (along with a few other fixes)

There may also be a video made for this later, but we shall see. It isn't so important at the moment :happy:

It will be, it has 1/2 of just 2 areas left... one of which is very small, the other I just have to figure out how I am working the design. Plus a few exterior textures but I have immenor helping me with textures when he can now.

According to the chat I had with mace, he won't touch the map right now, until a new release *after V1* or if there's more room to make more improvements in the future, I take it.

I did mentioned this to mace that I will miss tatooine's good ol' night sky and he said that it's way too bright *night version* , then the new daybright version, lul. So I take it that the screenshot is just way 2 dark.

Yeah, this map has "done" status for me right now, so I am not going to do anything else for the moment as it takes time away from working on CC, RC, or dotfv2

That, however, is not what this post is for. Who here remembers community coop kamino? Well, I have been working on it since then with the beta team, improving on it even farther layout wise, and making the visuals better across the map. I wont go into details as to how I am doing that, you have to guess.

Here is part one, two pictures of two of the main areas on kamino. Lets see how many differences you can spot. Some of the changes aren't visible in the screenshots. Lets just focus on what is visible though.



You can also post your opinions on facebook and moddb as they are there as well. Whatever is easier! Guess away!

I have created a LiveStream account.

I will be broadcasting whenever I am working on stuff for MB2 or JKG. I will record them as well, for watching later. It is currently a free account, and likely will stay that way. ($350 a month otherwise) so I am sorry for the low quality, but I think its still plenty viewable. It may also help some of the newer level designers of the community to see how I do some of the things I do.

I have also setup an Auto-pilot feature and On-Demand. Auto-pilot allows select videos to cycle through when I am not broadcasting on the stream. Which consists of videos from MB2, 3, and JKG. On-Demand allows you to view some of my recorded broadcasting sessions from before. Just in case you weren't there when I was broadcasting.

CC requires a lot more effort than dotf v2. Plus, im working on MB3 CC and MB2 CC simultaneously. Dont worry, it will get done. I am stumpted on what to do for a few things design wise though.

What I'm hoping happens is that AOD throws a fit and decides to use the current version of DotF that no one will have and causes a version hell. Kinda like how the old CC often kills rotation population because no one has it (except it's not hated). Then people stop playing at AOD because it's running an old map no one has and we all live happily ever after on other maps.

I just hope dotf v2 will be a complete replacement of dotf and i wont have to deal with dotf - dotf2 - dotf rotation servers in future.

As Hex said it should solve the "we just get 5 disruptors and block main totally until side is hacked" imbalance of this map in open gameplay since there is way better cover for all classes. Iam a bit sad though that i see the same throne room. If you also could integrate a new throne room which is essentially harder to defend i would be perfectly happy.
The look of it is just awesome. Keep up the good work.

Here is a picture showing one of the upgrades from the current MB2 CC that I made for MB3 CC. Of course, as I said before, this will in turn benefit mb2. This new and improved texture will be downscaled to work for JKA and replace immenors current texture. So, increased quality across the board. Working on two maps at the same time for different games, while only working on one. Success? I think yes!

Okay, Dotf looks atleast visually better, but the gameplay is probably not going to change much. I noticed that the stupid pillars by the sides of the main corridor no longer exist, now there's large pillars. Does this mean that popsnipers will have to jump out of their cover to be able to shoot at anything? I'd really like that.

Are those windows breakable? I take it they are not, because you could walk to the edge there and see the void.

This looks like quite a FPS killer, but I guess it's because of the best texture quality and dynamic lights+glows?

I work pretty hard to find a good balance between detail and performance. I have reduced detail in RC A LOT from its basejka counterpart to account for MBIIs lower overall fps, enhanced efx and model count.

I am NOT trying to kill your PCs, if anything im trying to make them run as best as possible in the current engine. Not wasting tris or texture data on meaningless things.

I have done a partial mini-revamp to Jabba. This includes parts of the map which were originally planned for a JabbaV2. Many areas are also left out, as they are unfinished. So pretty much, I just put the finished changes into the current Jabba, while leaving the others for potential future updates. This is the result.

There are only a few minor visual changes, most of the changes are behind the scenes in the form of brushwork and VIS. (The map is a mess)

So, here are pictures of the visual changes. The first few pictures you will see the big room in main has a lot more cover, and is a lot less open. The second set of pictures shows the area just outside of the door to the rancor pit. Instead of the mini-cantina looking area, it is now more of a cave with flames to light it up.







Here is a list of the CURRENT changes. A few more may happen during testing, you never know.


Added more spawns to Rebels. There are now 32 initial spawns to prevent telefrags.
Added more spawns to Imperials. There are now 64 initial spawns to prevent telefrags and crashes.
Added 60 second delay for initial Rebel spawn change to prevent flanking right off the bat.
Added new new pillars to the area in main to add cover and variety.
Added a new room outside of rancors pit, that looks more authentic.
Fixed a few wallbugs
Fixed a few areaportals
Fixed the cooking area in kitchen
Slightly updated lighting
Revamped brushwork in the main area, so that it aligns to the grid, and is easier to modify for later.
Revamped VIS stage, less detail brushes, more efficient structurals, and hint brushes.
Caulked LOTS of extraneous surfaces.

Yeah, I know about that, but I wont be fixing it because the brushwork down there is horrendous. I'd be better off making a whole new area down there. Maybe in the future, but this is about the best I can do for now.
