View Full Version : religion? jedi?
i always wondered.
how does religion fit into star wars.....
If the jedi are a religious order, does that mean other people in star wars worship them... i.e why does every say "may the force be with u" its obviously a strong belief they have, in the force. But would that counter the more original belief that god created everything.
It isnt really referenced in the films, but in the prequels the jedi ranks are huge.....surely this is proof enough that there is no such thing as god to normal star was ppl, as the jedi can explain all!
In some of the books it is also referenced slightly, "my religious beliefs condemm jedi"- jedi search etc etc.
Is the only religion in star wars jedi'ism or is there in fact none.
its widely believed that civilisation cannot function without some form of primitive religion/hope so how would star wars function....ie the bible belt class of starwars, the real poor ppl with no future only hope.
interesting side point, most may know, the jedi religion was accepted bout 8 years ago in the uk as a "real' belief by pranksters in a census! the needed about a thousand believers to put it down on the census to have the government recognise it.
Disclaimer, as its me posting i will just say it is impossible for any1 to be right or wrong in this thread, there will be no argueing, just opinions!
hmmm? i wonder if any1 will reply...........
The force seems to work as a god to normal people (those who don't understand it like jedi), but with so many planets one'd think at least some would have their own religions, of course religion has never been an important theme in the movies, so it's hard to tell. The only thing which sounded sorta religious was "the all powerful Sarlacc", so maybe some people in tatooine worship it.
dont forget the fact that the Ewoks saw C3PO as a kind of god
so they must have some sort of primitive religion
Which doesn't have anything versus eating sentient being btw.
Interestingly, jedi is now a nationally recognised religion in the UK and Australia due to the amount of people who put it on their census. This means that within 10 years the british government is required to set up and maintain jedi temples and places that teach the religion and serve as meeting places.
Oh god... the jedi council will be in the UK...
What about the Sith? Are they official too?

Interestingly, jedi is now a nationally recognised religion in the UK I read somewhere that it was aloud as an experiment to see how many people poked fun at authority.

personally i dont think we all need religion in fact in many cases (going OT a bit) it has be the cause of many many wars, im not saying people should not belive in something that would be wrong of me, but to say we NEED religion is not all together true, i dont need it and i dont belive in it, so maybe in the star wars universe they just evolved past that since they go to the furthest reaches of the galaxy and found no god. and belived in other things force etc, life bring up a family like most people would like to belive in.

rational religion
No such thing.
No-one put sith on their census, so no ;)
Then somebody should... yep... of course if anybody really believed in the Sith code (http://sithdominion.t35.com/code.html) (note that you could believe in the jedi/sith way of doing things without believing in the force... that could be "rational", or at least as rational a "religion" would get) things would get nasty... (i like the ancient code but i'm not going to kill anybody over it :P)
I commited to memory (is that how it is said....?) 'sith code' when I was in my sith clan :) I still remember it.. mostly.. and some other info about sith. Maybe Chair and I should make a sith religion ;)
And should I say something to topic also..mmm.. I quess there is religions but movie doesn't just show them. Or concentrate on them.

Now, now, have you forgotten the wise words of Obi-Wan Kenobi? ;D
"It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together."
and Yoda
"Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us....You must feel the Force around you; between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere."
Well, Lucas certainly did take some aspects from Indian, Chinese and Japanese religions... Now I have no idea how these are spelled in English.
Buddhism, Hinduism.
Chinese religions in general, the idea of balance.
Japanese - Chinese... Especially Japanese attempting to build their temples near the nature, a forest can actually be "a temple". Now how is that spelled... urgh... "Shintoism"
