View Full Version : MBII IMP - Confrontation Over Eosarim

a tale of suspense, intrigue, and clonetroopers wielding electrostaffs
I don't want to elaborate further cause i'm kind of lazy, so enjoy the blurb I cut out of the little wikiarticle piece i wrote up about the whole Eosarim plotline:
Numerous Jedi had escaped from either the Jedi Temple or, more commonly, their Outer Rim assignments. Most were killed, but a select few hid out on planets and ships throughout the galaxy. One ship, the Flying Bantha, served as a mobile headquarters for the Jedi who had escaped. An Incom heavy freighter, it was piloted by ex-Separatist arms smugglers. Warily sympathetic, and slightly confused, they let their freighter be a haven for any Jedi that
could get to it. One Jedi, Caluus Zeinai, had managed to board it while it was still docked at Coruscant, and was easily the most senior of the Jedi there, technically a Knight but considered too "reckless" to be promoted to Master.
At the same time, Palpatine, disappointed at how weakened Darth Vader had now become, decided to institute a series of Dark Jedi that would serve as his personal assassins (later to be named the Emperor's Hands and the Imperial Inquisitors). Sensing a large presence of strong, yet naive and weak-willed, Jedi, he put the Empire's resources to use to track down these Jedi. The Eosarim Crisis was essentially Palpatine's creation, just as the Clone Wars before it.
Less than a week later, Imperial forces pursued the Flying Bantha to Eosarim. Intelligence had confirmed the Jedi were on the ship. A Victory class Star Destroyer was unable to capture the ship by using its tractor beams despite disabling the ship's engines, so legions of stormtroopers were sent to cut open the ship's hatches and board the ship in space. The stakes were high for the Empire - if the stormtroopers could not open the ship up in time, their emergency air supply would run out, forcing the Victory to retreat for resupply. Thankfully for the Empire, the stormtroopers were able to breach the hull and board the ship. The Jedi, in an ironic twist of fate, now had to hunt down the stormtroopers.
The stormtroopers were able to reach an illegal tractor-beam resistor and destroy it with explosives. Minutes later, the cruiser pulled the ship into its cargo bay.
So basically, here's the deal. A limping disabled ship with lighting problems is being boarded by legions of clonetroopers intent on killing pretty much anything inside. FA really doesn't matter anyway (the only thing I'm going to say at this point is: expect lots of Jedi, lots of Clonetroopers, and a few special clonetroopers wielding electrostaffs), so
Objectives (TENTATIVE):
1. hack the security mainframe protecting the tractor beam resistor (choose one)
1a: Get to the security room and disable the mainframe
1b: Get to the bridge and disable the mainframe
1c: Get to the central computer and disable the mainframe
2. Destroy the tractor beam resistor.
I suppose at this point you're going to want screenshots, because this is in the visual section. Keep in mind these are basejka screenshots, I just want to give a basic feel of how the map will be lighted and what kind of atmosphere I'm aiming for. (as well as the clonetroopers with electrostaffs..have I mentioned them already?) In addition, I started this map about..3 days ago. Keep in mind this is a dark map, and the screenshots, as before, come out even darker. If you want to see more (you may lose some quality however), brighten them up in GIMP or Photoshop. In addition, a lot of these lights FLICKER. This means I have sometimes caught them on, but mostly off.
Managed to catch the flickering red light at the chair/console behind the one I'm at:
Nothing special here (just a door), but Rusty helped me with making the door look (and sound) nice, so I might as well give him some visual props:
As you can (kind of) see, I was looking at a Sith Ravager / Endar Spire, KOTOR sort of look with the bridge. Penguinator donated his awesome console prefabs. I know about the mis-aligned texture, by the way:
Isn't that blue glow nifty?:
And finally (for now), the Shadowtrooper (tentatively named, tentatively modeled as a regular clonetrooper). Yes, I will be using my MBII compatible electrostaff, and it will be red, not purple, as in the screenshot:

nice tokakeke :) but u could at least put flickings lights (if that's possible :P ) to brighten things up a bit.

Good map, tokakeke. You sure showed Jorgie.
Good map, tokakeke. You sure showed Jorgie.
as if thats saying much.
Try a tiny bit more ambient light, and some tiny details on your massive 90 degree angle edges.
I just want it so I can have the pleasure of recycling it. :p

Are you going to use the Shadow Clone model?
even if an important mapping rule is: all lights need sources... a few entity lights placed in the air will do good in that case
Cool map, toka. You da man now, dog!

Very tentative FA. Yes, I know, very unconventional, but believe it or not it works. Basically the Jedi classes have crappy defend but can push the crap out of the Shadowtroopers or any really stupid Clonetroopers/Stormtroopers that come their way, but can be easily taken down from both long and short range with a constant blaster barrage. THE DARKNESS (no, not the Dark Side, the low lighting) IS YOUR FRIEND, Jedi. Use it and you'll be alright. The droids have an RC-ish amount of armor and so are pretty hard to take down. The SBD kind of sucks until you realize the fact it's got 250 health. Again, you play RC, you'll know what this'll feel like.
The clonetroopers and stormtroopers are about equal but the stormtrooper has the slight edge due to his armor. Again, realism strikes us in the ass - numerous EU sources have said that stormtroopers can take quite a few blaster hits without falling, Han just knew how to aim. :) And that is the overriding theme of this FA: Jedi need guerrilla tactics, Imperials need accuracy.

Sorry for the DP, but I think if I put this in the previous post people would "too long, didn't read".
One thing I'm planning (and don't quote me on this if it never happens, cause it might not) is an additional trick for the Jedi - if they get to the security console before the clones do (or the clones decide not to hack the security console and go to the bridge / central computer to do their first obj), they can hack it and turn on a series of forcefields. The clones then have to hack the forcefields' control panels (set all over the place for detail as well) to take them down, maybe 6 seconds each.

...That's what we call "****** up".
The Jedi Padawan is exactly the same as Jedi Knight, except:
Jedi Padawan has 3 lives. Jedi Knight has 1 life.
Jedi Padawan has jump 2. Jedi Knight has jump 1.
Jedi Padawan doesn't have speed. Jedi Knight has speed level 1.
We need some balancing.

Bridge leads to hallways, take a left (facing away from the bridge) and you'll get to the doors to the tractor beam resistor.

Tokakeke']Again, you play RC, you'll know what this'll feel like.
Indeed. I just spammed granades. They were like some uber droids with bunch of armor (just target them in that red eye as a head and they're dead in matter of seconds). RC has a bit overpowered SBDs... And in movies, a clone would shoot 10 little blue bolts and SBD would drop dead. While here, you have to waste 50 or more bolts (unless you target the upper center of the SBD (red eye) XD )

what do you have against 90 degree angles? Did one of them abuse you as a child?
This is a boxy Separatist smuggling freighter, not the freaking Lady Luck. You won't find a lot of curves, and when they happen, they'll be mostly equipment, not corridors.

If you add in something really innovative for objective or game mechanics you could make up for the "pathetic" visuals.
Aha ! Well put. And I love that im quoted in infernox's sig now. Heheh.
And rusty. interesting radiant pic! any scripts in that ;)
Toka, Impress me with something. Make something detailed, and I will give you a cookie.
oh and just for fun in the map war:

Long script. extremly simple. Looks complicated tho hehe.
Brush count is 12227 all fit nicely inside of a 1024x1024x2048 box. no fancy entities and triggers like in rustys. haha.

Rusty, was that that map you sent me on MSN?
If so..it was pretty repetitive. :p
And who said the visuals had to be pathetic? Sure, at low lighting I can get away with a lot more detail-skipping, but I've made sure to add lots of detail - I'm just getting the basic layout down and showing off some places that are nearly done (such as the flashy corridors). Most of my detail has a purpose - panels on the walls don't just sit there, they deactivate forcefields, the consoles on the bridge are ALL possible objective triggers, etc. That's the problem I had when I first played Cloud City (and I'm guessing I'm not alone in this, when I see n00bs playing CC they do this too) - they ran up to the doors that had panels and tried to open them. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm aiming for more "if it's here, you can use it". I may be a gameplay over graphics guy but I can do good visuals - just you wait. :)
Oh, and by the way, I'm currently getting around 70fps on all settings maxed out on a 256mb AGP 6600GT, so you'll probably get higher. Thanks to Rust for putting in a couple hint brushes and fixing my doors' areaportals. And general FPS optimization. And of course thanks to Penguinator who has made some really kick-ass prefabs for these maps.
Tokakeke']If so..it was pretty repetitive. :p
Aye, but at least people can see the repeative look...
In two different colours!

Not that much considering the whole galaxy was completly gun orintated except for Jedi.
The most you'd see in such things would be the crimson guards and their force pikes and the use of combat blades probably.
[KP] Tokakeke
06-08-2006, 00:13
Considering the Separatists were organized by Darth Sidious/Palpatine, I don't find it unlikely that some from Baktoid Armor/Trade Federation would find their way into the Empire's hands.
And for the most part I don't see why melee weapons would be limited to force pikes. Especially when you're dealing with a bunch of escaped Jedi. In addition, you're also dealing with ray shield forcefields on the pirate ship, which according to Wookieepedia can be disabled with an electrostaff. And the whole operation's under the guidance of, and directly sanctioned by, the Emperor.

Silly question to ask.
Those were Grievous's and Grievous's alone.Which is why several of those annoying thieving droids stole some to solely combat Kenobi and Anakin. And the fact Grievous liked his collection of Sabers.

There is no limit. I have a Jedi in betrayal with 1.60 speed and jump 3 whos best strategy for attacking is jumping around like Yoda. In testnig I managed to kill three or four clones without stopping simply jumping around and dodging (manually, giving it dodge isn't a bad idea...)

Hey guys, I got an idea, let's be totally boring and squash everything that isn't exactly like how the movies say.
Also, let's only implement movie-realistic classes, like Ewoks with rocks that kill in one hit.
[KP] Tokakeke
06-08-2006, 02:38
Yeah, what the hell happened to complaining every FA of every CMP map ever made being unrealistic?
Or some of the official maps even?
I'm trying to be inventive here. The Jedi should have some sort of non-gunner opponent. I also have an electrostaff sitting in my MBII folder that was made for me by Corsair.
Hey guys, I got an idea, let's be totally boring and squash everything that isn't exactly like how the movies say.
I agree. We need overpowered Jedi on every map. Stormtroopers with 1hp to ensure one-hit kills. Increased gravity so small pushes kill. Level 1 weapons!
No more ARCs. Not even purple ones.
Or Clowns.

PURPLE GETS RID OF YOU!
ok toka. You havent earned your cookie yet.
That room has very good use of the tractor efx's, and that looks nice. However the lighting has to be one of the bigest problems. Its eaither 1 solid color or completly black. This isnt easy to do right. Not to mention the texxtures (and this is somthing I see in all of your maps) areant aligned in the right ways. There placed in places where for the given material it doesnt fit or make sense...
For example you have a fair amount of light textures effected by glow in that shot. Yet the lighting is 1.Red and 2. Almost non existant. May i mention that the top lights are white, and the bottem ones are blue. I would recommend shader lighting for you because it would govern its placement better.
On the geomtry side of things, the ring around the tractor core is extremly paper thin, Thicken that curve, give it some depth. Get a good trim texture for around the edges. And once again,
Give it some real light.
[KP] Tokakeke
06-08-2006, 19:15
(there will be a bit more light in it too, i only placed red lights [from the consoles] on one side to see how it looks)
And the ring is fine. I messed with the depth and had a hell of a time getting stuff right thanks to how retardedly the thicken command splits patches. I had to manually split each patch and then fix all the alignments myself. I think it looks alright as is.
Why is it silly? I'm not a mapper/scripter/whatever, so I wouldn't know.
Ah, but you see, you have knowledge of how retarded JA is.
So there is no speed limit.
Where was I making that comment about the ARC anyway? It just appears to be made up. Cross-referrence/made-up quotes ftl.
